With Stalin’s Popularity at Record High, Russian Activists Try to Preserve Uncensored History

Built in the foothills of the Ural Mountains, under Soviet dictator Josef Stalin in 1940s, Perm-36 is the only surviving forced labor camp of its kind.  It’s a museum now, with a mission to memorialize millions who perished under Soviet political repression. But at a time when Stalin’s popularity is on the rise in Russia and the government is trying to restore the country’s historic greatness, the museum is the new ideological battleground for the hearts and minds of average Russians. VOA’s Igor Tsikhanenka traveled to the camp site in Perm Russia and has more in this report.
